A serious earthquake with a magnitude of seven.4 struck off Taiwan’s japanese coast Wednesday at 8 AM native time, in response to the US Geological Survey, prompting tsunami warnings for the island and southern Japan.
The quake’s epicenter is situated about 18 kilometers (11 miles) south of the town of Hualien. Tremors have been felt throughout the island, together with by CNN staff in Taipei.
Officers in Hualien county stated that work and faculty have been suspended following the earthquake. On social media, customers posted photographs of tilted and half-collapsed buildings and landslides within the space. Authorities sent an alert to residents that they need to search cowl close by, crouch down and “keep calm.”
The quake had a depth of around 21 miles, in response to the USGS. It was situated about 11 miles south-southwest of Hualien Metropolis.
